OK, I was REALLY worried about this and I decided to call the city, but the "works" dept said if you smell something funny in your drain call 911. We ran some cold water into the sink to make sure the trap was filled and we'll keep an eye on it.īut there was NO DOUBT the main drain was STRONG with acetone odor.Īssuming everything goes fine tonight (and we don't blow up) I will ask the city sewer workers tomorrow about it. I took the rag out and BAM! it was like taking a whiff right off of a can of acetone. In the meantime it's been WEEKS since we've used that sink, and I suspect that the trap may have evaporated a little.īecause I went to the basement where we have a unused 3/4" pipe coming off the main drain with a rag stuck in it. Our powder room faucet has a leaky hot water valve, so we cut off the supply to that sink and we wash our hands in the kitchen sink until I get around to replacing the faucet. My wife noticed such a smell (actually, it is EXACTLY the smell of acetone, keep reading) in our powder room. (they will be back tomorrow, making 3 days) In my town here, the city was doing some MAJOR work on one of the main sewer lines. It doesn't have a sulfur-like quality to it.Įdit: Grammar (expect more probably. What else could it be? Every search for "weird" smell online and in the subs generally talk about smells that are more related to sewer or gas but this smell doesn't really seem to fit the mold.

However, if it was exhaust related, wouldn't I be smelling it in the utility room too? It does straddle the utility room that houses the water heater and the boiler and the exhaust chimney does run through it. Anyone in the community have an idea on what it could it be? I haven't called the fire department yet because I figure a gas leak would smell like rotten eggs/sulfur and I've placed our CM alarm in the bathroom to see if whatever is causing the smell is CM related. We have a weird chemical (acetone/sharpie like) smell in the bathroom. (If this should go to someplace like r/HomeImprovements, let me know). Don't know if there is a trap on the shower as it's a sealed unit, but I'm guessing yes (and can't smell anything).Sorry if I am posting in the wrong sub. The bathroom sink waste pipe has a bottle-trap on it. Cant detect a smell from the plugholes in the bathroom either. I also looked behind all of the cabinets for a problem, but could not see anything.ģ) Gas from drains? The sink doesn't smell in the kitchen, and it's got a P-bend trap on the pipe - so I can't see a problem there. So I moved the bin to a small storage room at the back of the kitchen (and kept the door closed) and thoroughly cleaned inside the cupboard under the sink.

I thought maybe it was the bin under the kitchen sink that might be causing it. Not really sure where else something could have gotten, as everything seems to be tight against the concrete.Ģ) Smell from kitchen moving into rest of house? I never really detected a bad smell in the kitchen, but thought I'd rule it out anyway. I've taken up some of the wood on the stairs (not all yet) but not looking promising, as there really isn't much space between the wood boards and the concrete. The Smell: The best description of the smell I can give is something like old rubbish.ġ) Something died somewhere? This was my initial thought, and since I usually notice the smell on the stairs I thought I'd try there first. Occasionally I have felt it upstairs, but assume this is it drifting. However sometimes it doesn't smell on the stairs at all, but rather in the ground floor hallway. Location of the smell: I usually smell it when coming down the stairs, seems to be strongest about half way down. The floor in the hall and kitchen is tiles over concrete, the rest woodblock/parquet over concrete.

There is a wide hallway on the groundfloor connecting the rooms (including kitchen, toilet/shower room, stairwell). Here's some info:īackground: The house is a two floor (plus basement) block/concrete construction.

#Fumy smell in washer oom how to

I'm hoping someone on here could offer some tips on how to track it down, or what it might be. It's driving me crazy (actually, my wife thinks I am crazy as she can't smell it). We have recently moved home, and all is fine appart from a mystery smell which I'm unable to track down.
